The Trump administration claimed credit Friday for an announcement by cable provider Charter Communications that it intends to hire 20,000 workers in the United States and invest $25 billion in high-speed Internet over the next four years.
At a White House event with the second-largest US cable company's Chief Executive Thomas Rutledge and Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Trump praised Charter for planning to close its offshore call centers and move them to the United States. "Charter is also committed to completely ending its offshore call centers.and to base 100% of its call centers in the United States.Tom will be opening a brand new, lovely call center in McAllen, Texas.where they will create 600 new American jobs".
With Rutledge's White House visit, Charter added a new detail to those plans; it's hiring those workers within four years. "Charter has also pledged to completely end its offshore call centers".
The operator had previously pledged to bring call center jobs back to the United States during the regulatory review that occurred in 2015/2016 before it bought TWC and Bright House Networks, which was finalized past year.
"We have a President that is living up to his campaign promise, and that is to create more jobs", Governor Abbott said while sitting next to the President in the Oval Office. That amounts to an average investment of $6.25 billion a year.
The deal was approved by the FCC in May of 2016, and Rutledge said this January that the addition of the 20,000 jobs would take place over the next three years. Rutledge said at the press conference that the company was willing to commit such a hefty amount due, at least in part, to the "favorable regulatory and tax policies" he expects from the Trump administration.
But parts of that pledge by Charter chief executive Tom Rutledge had already been made months ago. It will also open a new bilingual call center in McAllen, hiring 600 workers there.
"I'm pleased to see that our investment-friendly policies, along with the Administration's overall regulatory approach, are already producing results", Pai says.
"At Charter, our commitment is to serve our customers directly", the company said in a statement Friday.
