Walsh was White House chief of staff Reince Priebus' deputy, joining him in the administration after serving as chief of staff to Priebus when he was chairman of the Republican National Committee. Politico reports that Walsh's departure is part of a larger plan to give a boost to pro-Trump outside organizations that will provide support for his policies.
Walsh's departure comes as the Trump adminstration is mired in controversy over ties to Russian Federation and after the failure of Trump's first major legislative action, despite Republican control of both houses of Congress and the White House.
Priebus, Bannon and Kushner all said they needed Walsh on the outside because it became abundantly clear during the healthcare debate that the administration was getting hammered with no air support. "No one can fix this problem better than Katie". Why was Walsh so unpopular in the Trump White House? Her departure means the loss of a key Priebus ally at the White House as well as one of its highest-ranking women.
America First Policies, once envisioned as the marquee outside group to bolster Trump's political objectives.
The only apparent evidence that Walsh did not support Trump's election was a private meeting the RNC held with reporters before Trump's victory, in which she shared the committee's own forecast models that predicted he would lose the election by about 30 points.
"It was a very collective conversation that we could have moved the health care message more effectively", the White House official told CNN.
It is reported she chose to join the group after the Trump-backed health care bill failed to amass enough support last week.
