The libertarian-leaning Amash was among the conservative and moderate Republicans who contributed to defeating the GOP plan to replace the Affordable Care Act.
Amash, a Republican from Cascade Township, lumped Trump and the establishment together with a "same old agenda: Attack Conservatives, libertarians & independent thinkers".
The direct intervention by Scavino, who has worked for Trump since caddying for the then-real estate developer as a teenager, is however a new sign of division between Trump and congressional Republicans.
The list of House Freedom Caucus members being targeted by President Trump for sinking Republicans' ObamaCare overhaul plan grew Saturday when the White House singled out Michigan Rep. Justin Amash for a primary defeat. "Most people don't take too well to being bullied", said Rep. Amash on Thursday in response to a tweet from President Donald Trump criticizing the Freedom Caucus.
In a reference to rightwing descriptions of supposedly self-serving Washington DC, Amash derided the AHCA as "Swampcare". Raul Labrador of Idaho, Rep. Jim Jordan of OH and its chair, Mark Meadows of North Carolina.
Meadows and Labrador stumped for Trump in 2016, and Labrador was considered for a cabinet post. A tweet Saturday, April 1, 2017, by White House social media director Dan Scavino Jr., comes two days after Trump threatened conservative lawmakers who thwarted a House vote on health care legislation. "We're trying to help u succeed".
Amash and Stanford are not the first Freedom Caucus members on Trump's political hit list. The maverick Michigan Republican is however used to primary challenges.
However, a competitive primary in Amash's district, which includes the city of Grand Rapids, could have political consequences. In his MI district he ran far ahead of Trump, winning 60 percent of the vote in 2016 compared to Trump's 52 percent.
When later questioned about his criticism of the president this week, Amash called Trump a "childish bully", equating the him to a fifth grader.
While the aide sent the tweet from an account labeled as his "personal" account, Painter pointed to the account's image - Scavino pictured in the White House - and called for him to be fired.
The White House had no immediate comment.
