While these days Apple has mostly shifted its focus towards the iPhone and the Macbook, one could easily forget the Cupertino heavyweight got its beginning with the launch of the now-legendary Macintosh computer.
Starting today, you'll be able to pick up the little black cylinder featuring a -core Intel Xeon processor, dual AMD FirePro D500 GPUs and 16GB of memory (up from a 3.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5 with 12GB of memory) for an entry-level $2,999.
He revealed this in a press briefing earlier today in which more details were also revealed about the company's plans for the Mac Pro and iMac. In retrospect, it didn't well suit some of the people we wanted to reach.
It has been a while since Apple talked about the Mac mini.
With respect to the forthcoming changes to the Mac Pro, Apple executives took some time to address the limitations of the current design. The Mac Pro AAPL introduced in 2013 looked cool, but its compact cylinder form factor limited upgrade options.
Aside from new Mac Pros on the horizon, Apple also said that the company is also working on revamped iMacs with professional-oriented configurations. Although some estimates go as far as saying there are more than 1 billion Windows-powered PCs in use across the globe, Microsoft officially claims there are 400 million active users of Windows 10 itself.
While Phil Schiller hesitated to say that the recent Mac Pro design was a mistake, he did seem to concede that the design was short-sighted. "The CPUs, we're moving them down the line".
According to John Gruber, who attended the small roundtable discussion with some of Apple's top executives, Apple not only has plans to revitalize the iMac lineup but is eager to illustrate that it has not forgotten about desktop Mac users.
"If we've had a pause in upgrades and updates, we're sorry for that - what happened with the Mac Pro - and we're going to come out with something great to replace it", he added.
Unfortunately, the new Mac Pro is not coming anytime soon - not in 2017, at least: "You won't see any of these products this year", Schiller revealed.
Schiller stated that "We are completely rethinking the Mac Pro" and he also confirmed that a Mac Pro display is also in the works, stating "Since the Mac Pro is a modular system, we are also doing a pro display".
