Lugo, who was vying this spring for the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation, was placed on the disabled list to start the season with what was initially described as arm fatigue.
The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is the ligament that is commonly repaired in the always-dreaded Tommy John surgery. Lugo had a heavy workload in the WBC by throwing 15 innings for Team Puerto Rico, but that is not believed to be the cause of the tear.
Seth Lugo is yet another NY Mets pitcher to come down with an injury. He was a big help down the stretch to an injury-depleted pitching staff, helping the Mets reach the NL wild-card game. While there is no real timetable for Lugo's return at the moment, it likely won't be soon either.
Lefty Steven Matz recently suffered a strained flexor tendon that is expected to keep him sidelined for a while, so the Mets now have a pair of their young hurlers on the shelf for an undetermined period. The losses of Lugo and Matz put even more pressure on them to stay healthy, however. With the Mets this spring, he was 2-1 with a 5.56 ERA over 11 1/3 innings.
And in Monday's season opener, Noah Syndergaard left his start after six innings because of a blister on his middle finger. Suter did not allow a run in 12 relief appearances with Milwaukee last season, going 2-0.
