A second student was badly wounded by the gunman, who authorities said had a criminal history that included weapons charges and domestic violence that predated his brief marriage to the slain teacher.
"I don't know what to tell her", Barajas said as the two held each other and sobbed after the ordeal that sent police flooding onto the campus of San Bernardino's North Park School.

Police identified the gunman as Cedric Anderson, 53, of Riverside. He then turned the gun on himself, according to Burguan.
Shot dead was 8 year old boy, Jonathan Martinez who at the time of the shooting was standing near the teacher.
The other student was reportedly in a stable condition at the hospital.
"School campuses are sacred spaces where children should be free to learn, play and grow without threat of violence", Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement.
A man who authorities say killed his estranged wife and a student in her special-needs classroom had posted on social media last month that his wife was "an angel".
Police did not identify the shooter or the teacher.
Madden said police received reports of the shooting at the school shortly before 10:30 a.m., and officers responded within minutes. "The suspect had come to the classroom to visit", police Capt. Ron Maass told reporters.
A school police officer is assigned to every LAUSD high school and numerous middle schools, said LAUSD spokeswoman Monica Carazo.
In December 2015, San Bernardino was hit by a mass shooting at a meeting which left 14 people killed and 22 others injured.
At the time, before the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, it was the deadliest attack on U.S. soil since September 11, 2001.
"My heart and prayers go out to the victims of today's frightful act in San Bernardino and to the whole North Park Elementary School community", Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said in a statement. Happened in a classroom.
