Kevin Chappell grabs Texas Open lead, eyes first PGA Tour victory

Apr 22 2017 San Antonio TX USA Kevin Chappell reacts after his par putt on the 18th green during the third round of the Valero Texas Op

With 17 players off the lead by four shots or less, the final round at the Valero Texas Open should be an exciting one.

It would have been easy for Chappell to succumb to the course and conditions, especially after he had three bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine and turned with a 38.

But Koepka made the charge with birdies on his opening two holes, then a streak of three more starting with a 20-foot birdie putt at No. 6.

Funk and Sluman, who won the tournament in 2014, birdied five of their first six holes on the par-3 Top of the Rock course while playing modified alternate shot and closed with five more birdies on the back nine in a four-ball format. Grace shot a 2-under 70 Saturday, while Huh finished eagle-birdie to card a 1-under 71.

Ryan Palmer, a West Texas native who cut through winds as strong as 25 miles per hour (40kph), had the round of the day with four-under 68. Joining him are Americans Bud Cauley (74), Tony Finau (74), and Kevin Tway (72), Carl Pettersson of Sweden (71), Australia's Cameron Smith (73) and 2013 Texas Open victor Martin Laird (71) of Scotland.

He hit his third shot into a water hazard and bogeyed the par-five hole to finish at nine under for the tournament.

"It's huge, after the start I've had and the struggles I was going through", Palmer said.

"I just needed to find a rhythm", Chappell said. This golf course really gets all of your game.

"It's hard to win out here - everybody knows that", Koepka said.

"I feel like I've made some strides mentally and physically". "I'm knocking on the door to get my second win". He tapped in to gain a stroke, and he made good two holes later with a 12-foot birdie.

He is tied with Seamus Power, who was two over par after 10 holes of his third round.

Chappell did thanks to the late birdie binge and par putts of 10 feet at the 15th and six feet at 18 that left him screaming with joy. He sank a 56-foot putt to birdie earlier at No. 6, so he 2-putted for the birdie at 17 and ran in another birdie at 18.

Wiesberger has been in impressive form the last eight months, having not missed a cut since the PGA Championship with seven top-five finishes.

Sunday is set up for a frenetic finish with 26 players now within five shots of the lead.
