"The perpetrator of the attack in Champs Elysees in central Paris is Abu Yussef the Belgian and he is one of the Islamic State's fighters", said an IS statement published by its propaganda agency Amaq.

Paris: One police officer was killed and three wounded in a shooting on Paris's Champs Elysees, police said, just days ahead of France's presidential election.

As well as the assault rifle used in the attack, a pump action shotgun and knives were in his vehicle, Molins said.

Police investigating Thursday's attack found a note praising IS that apparently fell from the pocket of French assailant Karim Cheurfi, Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins said.

Cheurfi served 10 years in prison after firing on two plainclothes officers in 2001 as they tried to apprehend him in a stolen vehicle.

One officer was killed and two police officers were seriously wounded when the attacker emerged from a auto and used an automatic weapon to shoot at officers outside a Marks & Spencer's department store at the center of the Champs-Elysees, anti-terrorism prosecutor Francois Molins said.

He vowed that, if elected, he would within weeks of taking power create a task force to coordinate French intelligence efforts against the Islamic State group.

Three of the four presidential frontrunners - Le Pen, centrist Emmanuel Macron and conservative Francois Fillon - called off campaign events planned for Friday in the wake of the attack.

The policeman killed on Paris' most famous boulevard has been identified as Xavier Jugele by Flag!, a French association of LGBT police officers.

Cheurfi was only released in 2015 but was detained again this February - only to be released due to a lack of evidence.

James and Sara Heuser, who married about a year ago, were dining in a restaurant on Champs Elysees when they first heard shots being fired in yesterday's Paris attack.

The AP report also notes that the president added "he's not anxious about emboldening terrorists by saying an attack can have an impact on a democratic election".

A second man, suspected of being linked to the shooting, surrendered himself in Belgium.

Two radicalised men were arrested in the southern city of Marseille on Tuesday and authorities believe they had been trying to launch an "imminent" attack on the campaign.

National Front (FN) leader Le Pen pledged to expel radical Islamists and restore border checks after the attack while En Marche! leader Macron stressed that France must not panic, because that would play into the terrorists' hands.

Polling before Thursday's attack suggested that Le Pen would make the runoff election after the first vote but lose in a one-on-one race.

France has been under a state of emergency for almost a year and a half, with more than 230 people killed in jihadist attacks since the start of 2015.
