More work needed in mental health: Coleman

"People with mental illness just need to pull themselves together and get busy". "This has led to seemingly endless waiting lists and aribtrary restrictions placed on the use of campus mental health services such as no-cost professional counselling".

While the sector "currently provides high quality mental health services for New Zealanders across the continuum of care", there were "undoubtedly" challenges in meeting demand, he said.

"As important as fundraising is, raising awareness about depression and mental health issues is just as important", said Coordinator Andrea McRae.

"With increasing pressure within the health services as a whole, women are often being discharged from hospital earlier to receive continued support within the community", she added.

The Minister of Health has today released details of a "social investment approach" to mental health, including a National Improvement Programme funded from within existing baselines. Mental health issues affect us all, in various ways, and this is one reason why we think it is essential to help inform the public, especially young people, about the assistance and tools that they can access. For years, the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario has called for greater and more sustainable investment in psychotherapy and other support services in response to what many believe is a mental health crisis on campuses across Ontario.

If you or someone you know is in need of help for a mental illness, visit your primary care physician, call a mental health specialist, contact NAMI at 1-800-950-NAMI for referral sources, or call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK. (RSVP at http://www.zeidlercenter.org/mentalhealth).

"Todays announcement is proof that student action works and that student voices were listened to when it came to addressing the mental health crisis on college and university campuses", said Hoilett.

People experience symptoms of mental illnesses differently-and some engage in potentially unsafe or risky behaviors to avoid or cover up symptoms of a potential mental health problem.

As part of the 2017 Budget, Ontario is boosting funding for mental health services and supports for people across the province.
