Allardyce keen on Defoe but needs Palace safety first

Sam Allardyce interested in bringing Jermain Defoe to Crystal Palace

Sunderland manager David Moyes has this morning confirmed that he'll remain as Black Cats boss despite their relegation from the Premier League.

Seven days after calling his own position into question - "I will assess the situation at the end of the season", he said - the Scot has held positive discussions with Sunderland's hierarchy.

Moyes was also questioned over the Sunderland futures of star pair Jermain Defoe and Jordan Pickford, both of whom have impressed this season despite the club's relegation. And I don't want to waste people's money by spending a lot of money on just a back-up.

Sunderland may only have pride to play for now but can still have a big say in the relegation battle with games against fourth-from-bottom Hull City on Saturday night (EST) and Swansea City (currently in the last relegations spot) next week.

"I think I've still a got year in me but all of the injuries that I've had over the last two years, I don't think my body can take much more", he told SkySports. "I've got a four-year contract so I don't know what you're talking about "a decision". I told them exactly.

The 35-year-old has made 17 appearances across all competitions this season but is one of many players to have suffered injury problems throughout the campaign. "We have to try and bring players in who are going to improve the first XI and keep the club improving". If Jermain's one of them, we'll be pushing on that one if we can.

Moyes said: 'We can only lose the ones who are out of contract. "Keeper Jordan Pickford is under contract", said Moyes.

England worldwide Defoe is in demand after Sunderland's relegation, with a clause existing in his contract that will reportedly allow him to leave for free now that his side are dropping to the second tier.
