Hit by NASCAR penalty, Joey Logano says team doesn't cheat

Joey Logano's Richmond win won't count towards NASCAR playoffs

Team Penske's No. 22 driven by Joey Logano was found to have a parts issue once the winning vehicle was torn down for R & D Inspection.

"We take penalties with a lot of seriousness and try to identify how that happened and where procedurally we missed and understanding the bounds of what has to happen to make sure we don't have issues like this, " Gordon said. "We're going to have to push as hard as we can to be successful, and sometimes you go over that line". You have to find that edge and get right to it. "When you're a little bit over, we're sitting talking about what we are today".

NASCAR announced Thursday morning a problem with Joey Logano's win in Richmond last weekend. What that means, in plain terms, is that the Team Penske driver can not use the win toward an automatic playoff spot, and the five playoff points for a victory would not apply to his tally.

"What we got in trouble for was something that really didn't make our vehicle any faster", Logano said. It wasn't enough to make it much faster, so, personally inside, I still look at it as a win. "Obviously. we've lost all the benefits of the win". "We're looking at the silver lining as something that's making us drive to win more and make us a little bit more determined to make it happen, so I think we can make up those points with the right attitude". Crew chief Todd Gordon was suspended two races. We've lost some cash. The penalty is pretty severe.

Separately, Team Penske is appealing a three-race suspension on the crew chief for teammate Brad Keselowski. We don't work that way at Team Penske, try to stay on the up and up and push the things to where we can.

Logano and the No. 22 team was fined 25 owner and driver points. Team Penske does not plan to appeal the penalty with NASCAR. Team Penske has gone to the last step, the final appeals officer.

Wolfe is sitting out this week's race, too.

Joey Logano started Sunday's race at Richmond from the rear and worked his way up through the field, using a late gamble to secure his first win of the season.

The violation was under Section 20 of the NASCAR Rule Book.

Denny Hamlin, who finished third place in the race at RIR, was also penalized following the post race inspection for having a missing lug nut. There are still 17 races left before the playoffs and only six drivers are now locked in because of race wins.
