North Korea parades military weapons, but no nuke test

'Conflict could break out at any moment' over N Korea: China

Pictures on state television showed thousands of soldiers marching in formation alongside tanks, balloons and enormous crowds.

Kim Jong Un didn't speak before North Korean television ended the live broadcast.

North Korea's military parade has been closely watched by outside experts to get a glimpse of the North's latest additions to its missile program and other new military equipment.

President Donald Trump is much more "vicious" and "aggressive" than his predecessor, a North Korean official argued Friday.

The isolated dictatorship celebrated the 105th birthday of its late founder with a massive military parade displaying what appeared to be previously-unseen KN-08 and KN-14 missiles.

The North has been increasingly challenging the U.S.in rhetoric following ambiguous language from the Trump administration as well as the recent missile strike against Syrian government forces.

North Korean state media warned that such "reckless acts of aggression" would be countered with "whatever methods the USA wants to take".

"We never beg for peace but we will take the toughest counteraction against the provocateurs in order to defend ourselves by powerful force of arms and keep to the road chosen by ourselves", read a statement quoted by Merrit.

Pyongyang is already under several sets of United Nations sanctions over its atomic and ballistic missile programmes. He pledged that his country will continue to conduct the tests.

Following repeated missile tests that drew global criticism, China banned all imports of North Korean coal on February 26, cutting off the country's most important export product. A carrier strike group led by USS Carl Vinson made its way toward North Korea, in addition to a WC-135 "nuke-sniffer" being deployed to neighboring Japan.

On Wednesday, Mr Trump spoke on the phone with Mr Xi, who urged a peaceful resolution to the issue.

"It is possible the North may wage greater provocations such as a nuclear test timed with various anniversaries". Analysts, citing satellite images of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, suspect that North Korea may celebrate the important national day with a sixth nuclear test.

Saturday's holiday, known as the Day of the Sun, normally includes an enormous military parade and synchronized public performances, sometimes involving tens of thousands of people.

In this connection, the General Staff warned that "the people and army of the DPRK will take the most resolute countermeasures in response to the hostile political, economic and military actions of the United States".

Pyongyang residents have been seen practicing for the big day. There are now some 200 hundred foreign journalists in Pyongyang who have been invited to cover this parade and other celebratory events.

An enormous amount of work goes into preparing for April 15.

It comes amid speculation that the current leader, Kim Jong-un, could order another nuclear test.

He passed the leadership to his son, Kim Jong Il, who in turn passed it to Kim Jong Un.
