Trump vows 'we will confront anti-Semitism' at Holocaust memorial ceremony

Sirens bring Israel to standstill, marking pain of Holocaust

The museum will also unveil a new research center during Trump's appearance, a forum that will include details records and artifacts donated by Jews who were persecuted by Hitler during the Holocaust.

Israel's president is largely a ceremonial head of state who serves as the country's moral compass.

"As president of the United States, I will always stand with the Jewish people", Trump said at the event, which took place in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C.

When confronting accusations of anti-Semitism, Trump and those close to him note that his daughter Ivanka, son-in-law and three grandchildren are Jewish.

"Today, we mourn, we remember, we pray and we pledge: Never again".

The White House's statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day was just one example of its haphazard response to anti-Semitism, not helped by the fact that prominent white nationalist Richard Spencer praised the statement as "especially Trumpian" and lauded its "de-Judification" of the Holocaust.

Yet CNN's Dan Merica attempted to turn that positive and commendable gesture into an opportunity to attack President Trump - and to do so using demonstrably false claims about the administration and its staff.

Earlier this month, White House spokesman Sean Spicer issued an apology after using a press briefing to say "someone who was as despicable as Hitler ... didn't even sink to using chemical weapons".

Trump said at a Holocaust remembrance event at the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., on April 25 that "those who want to erase the Holocaust are an accomplice to this disgusting evil".

But the sentiment in Monday's statement was starkly different than the January White House statement on International Holocaust Remembrance Day that made no specific mention of Jewish people, spurring outrage and speculation about the omission.

The president also reaffirmed US's allegiance to Israel.

Last week, Democrats in Congress called on the president to fire adviser Sebastian Gorka over ties to anti-Semitic groups in Hungary, an allegation Gorka has denied.

"Through their suffering they have persevered, they have thrived and they have enlightened the world", Trump said.

"The duty we have is to remember that long dark night so as to never again repeat it", he said.

"Although it may seem safe to think that we share common interests with these parties, we must recall that there was and will be nothing in common with anti-Semites in any shape or form", he said.
