Multiple Sharks Spotted Off Southern Calif. Coast

Sharks Spotted Along Southern California Coast, Including 15 at San Onofre Beach; Advisories Issued in Long Beach, Orange County

A new shark advisory is in effect off Long Beach, California.

Also on Wednesday afternoon, about five sharks have been spotted in the water about 50 feet off the Long Beach shoreline.

Most of the sharks never left California this winter and are congregating in shark "hot spots" off Huntington Beach, San Onofre, Santa Monica Bay and Ventura, shark expert Chris Lowe told The San Francisco Chronicle.

However, a woman was bitten by a shark April 29 off San Onofre State Beach and is still recovering from her injuries.

In Orange County, people enjoying the water were told via a helicopter loudspeaker to make their way to shore due to a group 15 sharks, which can be aggressive, in the area.

One male paddle-boarder was seen scaring off a juvenile great white that was swimming just feet next to him.

Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Cameron Abel told 10News juvenile sharks arrived exactly the same time previous year in the same area and they were gone by the end of summer.

"We're seeing them up-close because the sting rays are close to shore", said Abel.

"Recent victories in restricting shark fishing and regulating the fin trade are essential to prevent extinction of many shark species", Schmidt says, "but it will take a long time for these actions to impact such depleted populations".

"Please be advised this area is heavily populated at the moment with large great white sharks, some of which are in the surf line".

During the video, the deputies said the sharks were south of Doheny State Beach in Capo Beach.

Young added that there had been no reports of sharks bumping or charging swimmers, nor have any attacks been reported.

Lowe said the part that is unknown is the extent to which global climate change is affecting marine animals in and near Southern California.

Southern California saw a spike in shark sightings around this time previous year, the AP reports, and marine officials say the shark appearances are the result of a "thriving aquatic ecosystem". "We should be excited they are here, because it means our local marine environment is healthy".
