Si Woo Kim becomes youngest winner of Players Championship

He started out three behind, but two birdies took him to eight under and into a share of the lead with the young Korean, Si Woo Kim.

Three weeks after thinking he had lost his PGA Tour card, England's Ian Poulter was battling for the first prize of nearly £1.5million in the Players Championship.

Adam Scott's record as the youngest victor of The Players Championship has been surpassed.

And while Kim now looks in line to make the President's Cup team, it was the rejuvinated Ian Poulter that grabbed much of the headlines.

Cabrera Bello then went on to birdie the island green 17th to move to six under.

Kim kept a clean card to the end for a 3-under 69 to become the youngest champion in the 44-year history of the biggest tournament this side of the majors.

Kim, who doesn't celebrate his 22nd birthday until June 28, said: "I didn't expect that I could be the champion of this tournament at this young age".

Kim also managed to take all the suspense from TPC Sawgrass.

"I still can't believe that I'm the champion and I'm the youngest champion for this championship and I'm very honored to be the champion for this unbelievable fifth Major event and I'm looking forward to working hard from now on", he told the media following the victory.

The annotated version: Brian Gay almost lost his PGA Tour card, but instead only failed to make the Players field; once he investigated further, though, he found an inconsistency from the previous points system; when he raised that issue to the PGA Tour, not only did he gain entrance into this tournament, but it offered a stay of execution for Poulter, who'd previously believed he'd lost his card.

Poulter stayed on Kim's heels throughout the final nine holes until a shanked approach shot into the trees right of the fairway on the closing hole ended his chance.

"It was one of the worst shots you will ever see to a pretty good one", Poulter said. There's not a shot out there that I'm comfortable hitting.

Kim was also the fourth different leader at the of each round, proving once again this course tested every golfer's abilities.

McIlroy is set to undergo an MRI scan today to determine the extent of an injury which hampered his efforts at Sawgrass.

"If you are on your game and playing well, that's the things you do", said Oosthuizen.

Chamblee, a victor of just one event in his PGA Tour career and that being the lowly Vancouver Open, referred to Poulter's approach at the 16th as "the worst shot of the day". If you can do that around this golf course, I mean you can outscore everyone. "And he played like someone that was doing it for five or six years like it was just another round of golf". It just shows you how good a player he is and how cool and calm he is. He never got flustered, and he never stepped outside the zone he seemed to exist in throughout the final 36 holes.

Spain's Cabrera Bello produced a spectacular finish to claim a tie for fourth with Stanley.

Cabrera Bello holed out from 181 yards for the first albatross in tournament history on the 16th, then followed that with another two on the 17th, before holing from 35 feet for par on the last after hooking his tee shot into the water. Before the nightmare final two holes, Holmes already had seven bogeys and a double.

World No. 1-ranked Dustin Johnson matched his best Players score with a 68 and posted his best 72-hole position with a tie for 12th at 2-under. Bernhard Langer is playing for the third straight year having won the Senior Players Championship.

As for the victor? - A first victory in the United States will have to wait for Louis Oosthuizen. He gets a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour, and a three-year exemption to the Masters.

South Korean Kim Si-woo has rallied to capture The Players Championship, one of the biggest tournaments on the PGA Tour. However, due to tour rules, Kim couldn't become a full-time member until he turned 18, which he did in the summer of 2013.

The runner-up finish brought Poulter $940,000 and enough FedEx Cup points to effectively secure his PGA Tour card for next year.
