US Senate confirms Ambassador to China

The Governor and Lt. Governor shared some light-hearted moments when talking about the transition

05/24/2017The U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly on Monday to confirm Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, one of the USA politicians most closely acquainted with China, as President Donald Trump's ambassador to Beijing.

Branstad, 70, was confirmed by the US Senate by a roll-call vote of 82-13, after the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee approved his nomination on May 9.

"The support of the party will transfer seamlessly from Gov. Branstad to Gov. Reynolds", he said.

Kim Reynolds has been sworn in as Iowa's next governor, becoming the state's first woman to hold the job after taking over for veteran Gov. Terry Branstad. But Lt. Gov. Reynolds said an announcement would be made on Thursday, May 25.

Trade and worldwide security are two of the main issues Branstad will have in his sights as he moves east. Professor Dong says the top priority will be getting the US and China on the same page when dealing with North Korea. Iowa Soybean Association President Rolland Schnell says that will be helpful in enhancing trade opportunities for USA soybean farmers.

He served as the Governor of Iowa in 1983-1999, and again since 2011. He will then be sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to the People's Republic of China by Judge Steven Colloton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.

She also outlined four key priorities for her time as governor: reforming Iowa's tax structure, innovating the energy policy, education for children and training for adults. As Branstad's longevity in office showed, Iowa has no term limits.

Kim Reynolds has the knowledge and experience to take on the role of Governor and move Iowa forward.

Rows of people were seated before a large stage Wednesday morning as music blared from nearby speakers. "I will do my best to serve as a role model for others to follow, and hope to emulate the finest qualities of those who led before me", Reynolds said.

I want to express my most honest congratulations to Governor Reynolds.

Branstad will resign at a ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday in his formal office at the Iowa Capitol. He is due to be replaced in Des Moines by Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, who would be the state's first woman governor. She will be sworn in by Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady. "If the past seven years are any indication, Iowans aren't going to see this leadership from Governor Reynolds". "We look forward to working with the new Governor to continue growing access to Iowa's own homegrown, earth-friendly fuels as part of Iowa's strategy to be a national energy leader".
