China calls climate change 'global consensus'

Elon Musk founder and chief executive of electric carmaker Tesla seen at a ceremony in Dubai in February said he would quite President Donald Trump's advisory panels if Washington pulls out of the Paris global climate agreement

President Donald Trump intends to make good on his campaign vow to withdraw the United States from a global pact to fight climate change, a source briefed on the decision said Wednesday, a move that promises to deepen a rift with US allies.

Trump has not yet made a formal announcement on what he plans to do about the deal, signed by 195 nations including the USA under President Obama, but according to multiple reports he is planning to pull out of the pact.

Those briefed by the White House insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the matter ahead of Trump's announcement Thursday afternoon in the Rose Garden.

Grassroots climate advocacy group SanDiego350 is calling for people to protest President Trump's widely expected decision to pull the USA out of the global Paris Climate Agreement.

Before being sworn into office, Trump told The New York Times in a November interview that he was looking at the climate accord "very closely" and that he has "an open mind to it". "AGAIN!", Trump's tweet read. Chief strategist Steve Bannon supports an exit, while senior adviser Jared Kushner generally thinks the deal is bad, but would like to find a way to see if the US emissions targets can be changed.

A US withdrawal would deepen a rift with USA allies and put the United States in the same league as Syria and Nicaragua as the world's only non-participants in the landmark 195-nation accord agreed upon in Paris in 2015.

At a Chinese Foreign Ministry Press Conference, Spokesperson Hua Chunying said that China will take concrete measures domestically to step up actions to counter climate change and will faithfully fulfill the Paris Agreement, which is also in line with China's own sustainable development.

The European Union is planning to spend tens of billions on climate-related issues by 2020, EU sources said ahead of the US announcement Thursday on the Paris agreement.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, left, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, right, enter a hall for their talks at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia, Thursday, June 1, 2017.

On the local level, Bay State legislators have provided an example of a certain degree of bipartisan consensus on addressing climate change. The CEO of SpaceX, Musk has said further delay in adopting policies to mitigate climate change would cause more "destruction than all the wars in history combined". "Climate solutions provide opportunities that are unmatchable".

Trump is expected to announce later this week that he intends to pull out of the landmark Paris agreement.

President Donald Trump signs an executive order on USA energy policy and climate regulations, on March 28 at the Environmental Protecton Agency in Washington, D.C. Looking on and smiling are EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, at left wearing blue tie, and coal industry workers.

Trump has already moved to dismantle Obama-era climate change regulations, including the U.S. Clean Power Plan aimed at reducing emissions from main coal-fired power plants.

The Pruitt team is deciding on whether to initiate a full, formal withdrawal which could take three years or exit the underlying United Nations climate change treaty, which would be faster but more extreme, Axis reported.

Russian Federation joined the chorus speaking out in favour of the climate accord. Most of the senators who signed are from states that depend on the continued burning of coal, oil and gas.

California Gov. Jerry Brown has called on States to forge an alliance to support the Paris climate deal, saying "I can't believe that in the face of science, (Trump) can say black is white". They include Apple, Google and Walmart.
