First defeat for US, but America's Cup holders still in control

'Foiling' America's Cup due to set sail Saturday in Bermuda

Underdogs Groupama Team France won their first race of the America's Cup in Bermuda on Sunday, while defender Oracle Team USA tasted defeat for the first time in the contest.

The overall victor will collide against Oracle Team USA in a best of 13 races in the finals.

Skipper Ainslie got the better of Franck Cammas's Team France at the start but - in a carbon copy of the defeats to the U.S. and New Zealand - quickly let that position of dominance slip, with little errors being heavily punished.

In their final race of the day, Spithill's crew scored a convincing win over SoftBank Team Japan, who had earlier lost to Emirates Team New Zealand.

The 35th edition of the America's Cup qualifying round is in full swing, as teams raced one another over the weekend.

In the last race of the round robin, Barker steered SoftBank Team Japan to a 2:34 rout of France.

Getting out of the start box ahead, the French team then looked to have thrown away their advantage, following a poor manoeuvre in the second leg which gifted the Swedish team the lead.

"We would have liked to have won more races but I'm not scared or anxious", said Land Rover BAR's team manager, Jono Macbeth.

"Today showed just how hard racing can be out there", Artemis skipper Outteridge said on Sunday, the prestigious sailing event's second day.

Ainslie said: "For sure we can do a better job with our communication".

Besides being top challengers, the Artemis and Team New Zealand sailors are familiar with one another. While Artemis Racing responded with a covering move early, they allowed a split further up the leg.

Despite shifting winds which died slightly towards the end, conditions in Bermuda's Great Sound were once again ideal, with the flat water allowing the boats good pace. “Its just a shame we couldnt repay that work with some wins today, ” he said.

Kiwi skipper Peter Burling unsurprisingly praised the decision.

Five years ago, as he won his fourth Olympic title at London 2012, he fumed as Jonas Hogh-Christensen and Pieter-Jan Postma appeared to team up to prevent his gold medal bid.

Artemis will face Ainslie's Land Rover BAR in the third race scheduled.

Emirates Team New Zealand beat Japan by 33 seconds and Britain by 1:28.

The last match of the day between Oracle and SoftBank Team Japan was the only one where the pre-start victor stayed in front the entire time.

"The boat seemed quick and I think we sailed okay but we got caught out by some needless mistakes which we need to address".
