Forbes releases list of 100 highest-paid athletes

American athletes compose more than half of the world's 100 highest-paid athletes in 2017, but none of them - not even National Basketball Association superstar LeBron James - could catch up to worldwide soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Forbes calculations released Wednesday.

Floyd Mayweather, a staple on Forbes' list for more than a decade, did not earn a spot in 2017.

Portugal captain Ronaldo topped the influential business magazine's list for the first time 12 months ago.

The rankings combine athletes' salary and endorsements.

Ronaldo is estimated to have earned a total of $93 million between his soccer salary of $58 million combined with $35 million in endorsement income.

Lionel Messi is the only other footballer to feature in the top 10, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic (the highest paid Premier League player) and Gareth Bale (the highest paid British player) featuring outside. James earned a $31.2 million salary and $55 million in endorsements.

The failure to claim these titles, after winning nine out of a possible 13 trophies under manager Luis Enrique, has motivated Messi to get back to the top of the pile under the guidance of new boss Ernesto Valverde.

There's no Canadian representation to speak of on the list, not even when it comes to the nation's favourite sport - no hockey player made the cut.

The golfers' income includes course design work. Basketball dominates the list with a record 32 NBA players among the top 100, up from 18 in 2016, followed by baseball with 22 players, American football with 15 and football with 9.

Sixty-three American athletes had top-100 salaries, mostly in the NBA, NFL, and Major League Baseball.
