Qatar won't back down in face of pressure: minister

Qatar leader to address nation

Nevertheless, on Monday Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE and several other countries severed diplomatic and transport ties with Qatar, accusing it of sponsoring terrorist groups.

"The dispute between Qatar and some Arab countries threatens the stability of the whole region", the Foreign Minister told reporters explaining that diplomacy remains Doha's preferred choice. Tehran, he said, proposed designating three of its ports to supply Qatar, though Doha is yet to accept the offer.

Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi says Qatar's citizens are "questioning if this is going to end up in seeing a change in leadership itself".

"We are an independent country with sovereignty", he told AFP, rejecting tutelage from other states.

In an interview with AFP, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani described as an attempt at "collective punishment" a decision by Saudi Arabia and its allies to cut ties with Qatar over alleged financing of extremist groups.

"We have been isolated because we are successful and progressive..."

A six-member Qatari delegation reached Islamabad late on Wednesday night, sources are reported to have said. The delegation is expected to meet high-level officials at the Prime Minister House who will also discuss the recent situation in the Gulf.

Qatar is not ready to change its foreign policy to resolve a dispute with fellow Gulf Arab states and will never compromise, foreign minister said. "We are a platform for peace, a platform for alternative policy in this region", he added.

The UAE and Saudis, seen as the driving force behind the push for a change in Qatar's foreign policy, claim they were let down in 2014 when, after a previous démarche, Qatar allegedly reneged on a commitment to rein its support for political Islam.

Qatar's foreign minister said that the country doesn't see military solution as an option to the Gulf crisis.

Ghobas said: "The idea that there is an Islamic solution to Middle East's social and economic problems is not something we are persuaded of".

The minister added that Qatar would respect its LNG gas agreement with the United Arab Emirates, despite the UAE allying with Saudi Arabia in the rift.
