Hawaii will stick with Paris climate accord, ignore President Trump's exit

A new law in Hawaii formally aligns the state with the greenhouse gas reduction goals of the Paris climate change agreement.

On Tuesday, North Korea's foreign ministry blasted Trump for his decision to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, removing the world's second-largest emitter of global warming pollutants from the treaty. According to the statement, those who have opted in and signed the pledge to continue involvement in the Paris Agreement, "all understand the agreement is a blueprint for job creation, stability and global prosperity and that accelerating the United States' clean energy transition is an opportunity - not a liability - to create jobs, spur innovation, promote trade and ensure American competitiveness". "In order for Hawaii to be an active participant in going green and looking at alternative energies", Okabe said, "we want to be the first, and we want to be the trendsetter for the world". "Tides are getting higher, biodiversity is shrinking, coral is bleaching, coastlines are eroding, weather is becoming more extreme".

Ige also set up a Carbon Farming Task Force, which will look at ways to help the agriculture industry improve soil health in Hawaii and that will examine carbon sequestration.

Sen. J. Kalani English, the senate majority leader who introduced SB 559, said the the state law will give lawmakers a "legal basis to continue adaption and mitigation strategies" for the state, "despite the Federal government's withdrawal from the treaty".

"Hawai'i and other Pacific Islands are already experiencing the impact of rising sea levels and natural disasters".

In the op-ed, the mayors address Pittsburgh's history as an industrial and polluted city continuing to make stride toward cleaning up its air.

Former President Barack Obama and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon shake hands as the USA formally joins the Paris climate agreement in 2016. Hawaii is joining at least 12 other states that have formed the U.S. Climate Alliance and promised to remain committed to the goals in the Paris deal.

"I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris", Trump said in his statement on the Paris Agreement last week.

A statement released Monday by the group "We Are Still In", says Trump's decision to opt out "undermines a key pillar in the fight against climate change".

The U.S.is now one of just three countries worldwide to be either outside the agreement or on their way out, with Syria and Nicaragua as the other two nations.
