OR first USA state to add third gender option on driver ID

Male, female or X? Oregon adds third option to driver's licenses

The Oregon Transportation Commission, which governs the state's transportation policy, approved the change today in its monthly meeting.

OR just became the first state in the U.S.to offer a gender-neutral option on driver's licenses and IDs, a huge win for individuals in the state who do not identify as male or female. The third marker will be X for not specified.

An employee of the advocacy group Basic Rights Oregon hands out stickers during an Oregon Driver and Motor Vehicle department public hearing on the rights of transgender people as the state considers adding a third gender choice to driver's licences and identification cards, in Portland, Oregon, May 10, 2017. Adding another gender marker to the system may seem small or insignificant to some, but for those who do not identify as binary and have been forced to exist within one on legal documents, finally being officially recognized on their license is a step toward being more recognized in society in general.

DMV Administrator Tom McClellan choked up as he read letters of support to the commission, including from someone who encountered an embarrassing situation while going through a body scanner at an airport, and the security officer didn't know whether to push the blue button for a male passenger or a pink one for a female one.

The Pacific Northwest state is the first in the country to offer a third non-binary gender option on ID cards. Reporting for the Oregonian at the time of the ruling, Parks wrote that the national Transgender Law Center was not aware of any similar victories in the United States. "Ideally, my child will grow up in a world and an OR that recognizes and sees them for who they are, no matter how they identity".

A new rule was adopted by the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles on Thursday. "It's something we should do because it's the right thing to do". "They found they could do that through the rule change".

"I've trembled with the fear of failure and cried tears until I had no more tears to cry, because of the magnitude of what's been at stake-and now won", Shupe told NBC News.

Gender identity has become a major flashpoint across the USA in places like North Carolina, which passed a bill forcing students to use toilets according to the sex listed on their birth certificates.
