White House torn over Mueller's role as pressure grows

White House Trump won’t sack special counsel Robert Mueller

The only man who can fire special counsel Robert Mueller, the man charged with investigating Russian interference in the USA election and possible collusion with Trump's campaign, says he sees no good cause to do so.

Rosenstein, who has been on the job for six weeks, said only he could fire Mueller, and only if he found good cause to do so.

"If there were good cause, I would consider it. If there were not good cause, it would not matter what anybody says".

Tuesday on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show", when asked about reports President Donald Trump was considering terminating Robert Mueller as special counsel, Senate Minority Leader Sen.

Under the present circumstances, however, and not without regret, I believe that the same ethics rules the attorney general cited in his Tuesday testimony counsel against Mueller's continuing to serve in the role assigned to him.

Rosenstein said that because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation matter, Mueller could only be fired by Rosenstein himself.

Now, Trump could order Rosenstein to fire Mueller.

He called because "I have been very clear" about Mueller and the lawyers he's hired amounting to a "rigged game", Gingrich said in an interview Tuesday on CBS. The Department of Justice appointed the former FBI chief to lead the investigation into Russian Federation following the firing of James Comey by President Trump. The White House clarification has come amidst reports that Trump is contemplating firing Mueller. Rosenstein last month appointed a special counsel to oversee the Russian Federation investigation.

Said Ryan: "I know Bob Mueller".

"You can raise those concerns" to both Mueller and the DOJ, Rosenstein told Graham.

High-profile supporters of Donald Trump are turning on the man investigating Russian interference in the United States election and possible collusion with the president's campaign - with one suggesting Mr Trump was considering "terminating" him. Ruddy is long-time friend of the President. An order from the president would not necessarily qualify, he said. If Trump were to make such a move, he would have to order Rosenstein to fire Mueller. That's at least how it seemed when Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as the special counsel for the US DOJ on May 17.

Gingrich tweeted, "Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair".

The White House did not immediately issue a comment.

Democratic senators on the committee attempted to clarify the boundaries of Sessions' recusal, something they say is unclear.

After initially being praised by Republicans and Democrats for his integrity, in recent days Mueller's impartiality as special counsel has been questioned by some Trump supporters.

Ruddy appeared to be basing his assessment on comments by Jay Sekulow, a member of Trump's personal legal team, on ABC News on Sunday, according to the Post.
