S. Korea reports more test-fires from North

North Korean missile

"North Korea fired multiple unidentified projectiles, assumed to be surface-to-ship missiles, this morning from the vicinity of Wonsan, Gangwon Province", the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul said.

Given that the USA recently has deployed warships to the Korean peninsula, it makes flawless sense for Pyongyang to respond with testing a missile that could one day attack them-even if, at this point, such a missile attack would not be successful.

North Korea fired off what appeared to be four anti-ship missiles into the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan Wednesday, according to local media, days after US and South Korean ships concluded joint military exercises there.

He had advocated reconciliation with Seoul's isolated and unpredictable neighbour, but has taken a more stern position in the wake of the missile tests, which pose a policy challenge to the left-leaning leader.

It is the fourth new missile system Pyongyang says it has introduced and successfully tested this year alone, sending a defiant message to its enemies that it will continue to pursue a weapons programme that has rattled its neighbours and Washington.

On May 14, North Korea fired a rocket that analysts estimate had a range of 4,500 kilometers, putting it within reach of Guam.

Pyongyang said it would continue with missile tests until the US makes the right choice, suggesting an openness to dialogue.

The launch came less than a week after the United Nations Security Council imposed fresh sanctions on North Korea, and drew condemnation from South Korean President Moon Jae In, who has hoped to engage Pyongyang in dialogue.

North Korea's top newspaper Rodong Sinmun ran a front-page photo of a beaming Kim surrounded by smiling generals in uniform, with further pictures inside apparently showing the cruise missiles being launched from the back of a tank-like vehicle, and hitting ships at sea.

The following day, the North's state media said the missile used a new high-precision guidance system in a test that was inspected by leader Kim Jong-Un.

North Korea has in recent years touted its drone program, a relatively new addition to its arsenal.

Nations that are "concerned" by North Korea's continuous missile tests should refrain from taking "any action that could escalate regional tensions", China's Foreign Ministry said on June 8. The trial was the first meant to replicate the flight profile of an ICBM that could be deployed by North Korea.

"Our military has strengthened surveillance and alertness readiness in cases of additional provocation by North Korean military and is maintaining all readiness posture while we are tracking and monitoring related situation", the statement read. "It will pose a considerable threat to US and South Korean navies", he told AFP. The improved range indicates North Korea is pursuing weapons capable of reaching USA aircraft carriers that operate from deeper positions, he said.

A U.S. State Department spokeswoman suggested Thursday that the North Korean issue remained far from any solution.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for North Korea's interior ministry lashed at U.S. and global sanctions against the Communist state, adding that such measures would only push the country to further develop its nuclear potential.
