Sphero's new toy is a chatty Spider-Man

It doesn't more around like the droid or the racing auto, the new Sphero Spider-Man toy has actually been described as a "storyteller".

With the new generation of "Spider-Man" on the way to the movies in the next few weeks, it makes sense for toy stores to get their action figures, web slingers, and anything else that can allow kids to relive their fondest memories of the movie, and possibly some adults, too. But unlike those two, Sphero's Spider-Man toy focuses more on interacting with kids through actually speaking to them. Again, though, the idea is that Sphero will continuously add stories to Spider-Man's arsenal.

Spider-Man will be released in 2018 exclusively for PS4.

Since this new Spider-Man toy uses voice commands, it's understandable that parents might worry about privacy. There's still a while to go until Spider-Man is released, but until then all eyes will be on the project to see how it develops. And while it will draw inspiration from decades of comic book storylines and characters, the game is its own self-contained Spider-Man universe, right down to the unique, white-highlighted suit that Peter Parker wears.

I left that demonstration full of excitement and hope for Spider-Man. You can also ask him what his favorite color is or what he's up to, and his responses will be playful just like the on-screen Spider-Man. Through a downloadable app (iOS or Android), Spidey is capable of telling jokes, asking trivia questions, guarding a room, and can team up with kids to "battle" classic Spider-Man villains.

When not fighting bad guys, hang out and strike up some banter with Spider-Man. If that logo isn't glowing, the toy's microphone isn't active, providing further reassurance to parents that Sphero isn't secretly trying to harvest demographic info about their kids.

You can pick it up and move it around and, because of the accelerometer, it will react. He said Spider-Man is only listening when the spider on his chest lights up, and the user's voice is never stored or shared.
