Milwaukee County sheriff not joining DHS, after all

Sheriff Clarke Won't Take DHS Post

The controversial lawman from Wisconsin on Friday turned down the position of assistant secretary, the Washington Post reported.

Clarke said in May he would be leading law enforcement outreach for Homeland Security's Office of Partnerships and Programs but the White House and Department of Homeland Security failed to confirm the job offer.

"Sheriff Clarke told Secretary Kelly he is very appreciative of the tremendous opportunity the secretary was offering, and expressed his support for the secretary and the agency", he added.

President Donald Trump met with Clarke on his visit to Milwaukee on Tuesday, and they "talked about alternative roles for Clarke", Peterson told the Journal-Sentinel.

Soon after Clarke's announcement, dozens of Democratic lawmakers urged Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly to reject the appointment, citing concerns over the Milwaukee County Jail deaths as well as Clark's previous criticisms of the Black Lives Matter movement, which he has called a "hateful ideology".

"The sheriff is reviewing options inside and outside of government", Peterson said.

While the DHS never confirmed any of this, Clarke said in May that he'd be taking a role in the department by the end of this month.

Clarke, who built a following among conservatives with his provocative social media presence, was a vocal supporter of Trump during his 2016 campaign.

He was hit by allegations last month that he plagiarized content in his master's thesis on homeland security, which he denied.
