Trump allies question Mueller probe

Friend says Trump is considering 'terminating' Mueller

Mueller has been silent since he was named to head the Russian Federation investigation on May 17, a week after Trump fired FBI chief James Comey expressing frustration over the probe.

On Monday, Christopher Ruddy, a longtime Trump friend, said in an interview on PBS that he had just come from the White House and that the president was "considering, perhaps, terminating the special counsel".

The topic of both hearings is the Justice Department's budget. Rosenstein would be the one to fire Mueller, which he repeatedly assured senators Tuesday he would not consider without "good cause".

"I won't mince words, " Leahy told Rosenstein on Tuesday.

Ryan echoed that sentiment, calling the reports about the president possibly moving to fire Mueller "a rumor".

If Mueller knew he was going to be named special counsel, it is unlikely he divulged that information to Trump. "Former Speaker-if you want to see the President on a fast track to impeachment, then he should take this advice and fire Mueller".

Under Department of Justice rules, it is actually up to the deputy attorney general to make that call, though the president could bypass that protocol. "I think the best thing to do is to let Robert Mueller do his job".

"They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story".

President Donald Trump acknowledged for the first time Friday that he is under federal investigation as part of the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii. Asked in a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing if there was any cause to fire Mueller, Rosenstein flatly replied: "No".

[B] ehind the scenes, the president soon began entertaining the idea of firing Mr. Mueller even as his staff tried to discourage him from something they believed would turn a bad situation into a catastrophe, according to several people with direct knowledge of Mr. Trump's interactions.

But he did note Tuesday morning in an email to Politico that a subsequent statement from White House press secretary Sean Spicer "doesn't deny my claim the President is considering firing Mueller" and that Ruddy never claimed to have spoken with Trump about Mueller.

The White House downplayed Ruddy's comments. Lindsey Graham and Susan Collins, have backed Mueller and said there's no reason to fire him. Mr Ruddy said Mr Mueller has some "conflicts" because his former law firm, Wilmer Hale, also representing Ms Ivanka Trump, the President's daughter, and her husband, Mr Jared Kushner.

Spicer, the spokesman, declined to say then that Sessions enjoyed Trump's confidence, though spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said later in the week that the president had confidence "in all of his Cabinet". But his refusal to answer a question about who directed him to write the infamous memo suggests he might also be a witness to a crime being investigated by the special counsel.

Sessions then recused himself in March from overseeing the FBI's Russian Federation probe and delegated that authority to his new deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein. Rosenstein had gone before the Committee's Senate counterpart earlier in the day.
