Why this ransomware attack is more alarming than the last

Hackers strike across Europe, sparking widespread disruption

It's the second major cyberattack in less than two months, coming hot on the heels of the WannaCry worm that hit computers across more than 150 countries in May.

Microsoft said the virus could spread through a flaw that was patched in a security update in March, according to the report.

Security researchers have discovered a "vaccine" for the huge cyber-attack that hit organisations across the world on Tuesday.

The rapidly-spreading virus, which hit Ukraine hardest on Tuesday, crippled computers running Microsoft Corp's Windows by encrypting hard drives and overwriting files, then demanded $300 in the digital currency bitcoin to restore access.

The payment method via an email address that was quickly shut down, is considered amateurish and led to speculation that the virus' goal was not monetary gain, but rather to simply cause damage.

The world's largest advertising agency did not specify how many WPP companies were affected, but The New Paper understands Ogilvy & Mather Group Singapore, Cohn & Wolfe Singapore and Fitch Design Singapore were affected. In Kiev, government workers at the old Chernobyl nuclear plant were forced to manually check radiation readings when their computers stopped working.

In a Facebook post, MEDoc confirmed it had been hacked but denied responsibility for originating the attack.

The impacted terminal is operated by Danish shipping giant AP Moller-Maersk, which also reported disruptions in Los Angeles.

Cadbury owner Mondelez International Inc said in a statement overnight staff in various regions were experiencing technical problems but it was unclear whether this was due to a cyber-attack.

Some computers displayed an English-language message demanding a Bitcoin ransom of $300, Forbes reported Tuesday, an action similar to that of the "WannaCry" virus cyberattack last month.

However security analysts at Kaspersky Lab said they had traced the infections to "a new ransomware that has not been seen before", dubbing "NotPetya".

Singapore Computer Emergency Response Team (SingCert) posted on its website today (June 28) that it was alerted on Tuesday (June 27) to the global spread of Petya, which is inspired by WannaCry, describing it as "more risky and intrusive" than WannaCry. Departments such as America's Homeland Security and Europol are also joining in the investigation, which has equally unsafe implications as the WanaCry assault. "That should stop the attack, but your computer can still transmit the "disease" to others". Others call it Goldeneye - the name of another recent strain of the Petya ransomware.

The email account associated with the ransomware has been blocked, so even if victims pay, they won't get their files back. His method tricks the ransomware into thinking that it's already operating on a machine.
