Wimbledon: Heather Watson matches best run by thrashing 18th seed Anastasija Sevastova

Heather Watson is into the third round at Wimbledon after beating Anastasija Sevastova

Heather Watson hammered out a statement of intent at Wimbledon on Wednesday, swiping aside 18th seed Anastasija Sevastova 6-0 6-4 to reach the third round.

The second was a tighter affair but the 25-year-old twice recovered from a break down to run out a 6-0 6-4 victor at the All England Club.

The first set saw Watson stroll to a 6-0 victory after less than 20 minutes, playing some pitch-perfect tennis.

Two-time Grand Slam victor Azarenka beat 15th seed Elena Vesnina to join Watson in round three, in her first return to Grand Slam action since giving birth to her son Leo in December previous year.

French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko fought back despite a string of errors to beat Canadian qualifier Francoise Abanda 4-6 7-6 (4) 6-3 and reach the third round at Wimbledon for the first time. It's always going to change.

"I felt very good at the beginning of the match, very on it and relaxed", said Watson. "I was pleased with how I remained calm and just kept doing what I was doing".

Two years ago at the same stage, the girl from Guernsey came within two points of knocking out Serena Williams only to lose in three sets. Nevertheless, Watson has good memories from that memorable match as she mentioned in her press conference, "The thing I remember most is just the support and the crowd during that match". "More relaxed than in my first match".

She dropped out of the top 100 and failed to qualify for the French Open but things finally came together again in Eastbourne last week, where she reached the semi-finals.

"I look forward to playing her".

It promises to be a fine contest and Watson will fancy her chances given Azarenka's lack of match practice. "I obviously know how she plays, she is a great player and was expecting and was prepared for the best".

She then rose to a career-high mark of 38 in January 2015 before slipping down again. "I'm going to watch Love Island".
