Hyperloop One had its first full-system test of ultrafast transportation system

Josh Giegel, the co-founder of Hyperloop One, said: "We're looking forward to showcasing our technology and believe that Europe is the ideal region for one of the world's first Hyperloop systems". By the time the test took place, the team had reduced the pressure inside the test tube to around five pascals, which it says made it the fourth-largest vacuum chamber in the world and the largest in private hands.

Hyperloop co-founder Shervin Pishevar called the test "our Kitty Hawk moment" in an interview with CBS News. A concept first conceived by Elon Musk in 2013, the hyperloop theoretically can send aluminum pods filled with passengers or cargo through a almost airless tube at speeds of up to 750 miles per hour.

Hyperloop's current pod is 28 feet long and is built from aluminum and carbon fiber, according to The Verge. Slowly but surely, the pods should reach breakneck speeds necessary to make the commute from San Francisco to Los Angeles in only 30 minutes.

"Fast to dig, low cost tunnels would also make Hyperloop adoption viable and enable rapid transit across densely populated regions, enabling travel from NY to Washington DC in less than 30 minutes", the company said in a published FAQ.

Hyperloop One says it'll continue to conduct test runs at the company's DevLoop track in Nevada, and the next phase will show the system's pod moving longer distances at faster speeds. The test run in May only hit a top speed of 112 kph (70 mph), although they said that their next milestone is to crank this up to 402 kph (250mph).

The goal of this first test was not to achieve record-breaking speeds, but to simulate the conditions of an aircraft flying at 200,000 feet. "Ever since we started the company three years ago, we've been aimed at this moment, the instant when we achieve controlled propulsion and levitation of a Hyperloop One vehicle in a vacuum environment", reads the post. "Hyperloop is real, and it's here now". Using electromagnetic propulsion and mag-lev technology, its created to carry both cargo and human passengers at near supersonic speeds.

Hyperloop One is also looking at possible locations to build a full-scale system.

In addition to reaching higher speeds, Hyperloop One has many other technical questions to address.
