Temple Mount closed to Jewish visitors after young Jews violated rules

Car ramming attack near Hebron: 2 IDF soldiers slightly injured, terrorist neutralized

Although the compound was reopened Sunday, Israeli authorities have erected metal detectors at the entrances of the Al-Aqsa compound, a move that was largely refused by Palestinians.

Israeli authorities say almost 50 Israelis have been killed in attacks by Palestinians during the same period.

Tensions have soared since Friday.

One Palestinian was seriously injured after being hit by a rubber bullet, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Palestinian worshipers have protested the new devices, which they say infringe upon the fragile status-quo governing Muslim and Jewish prayer at the incendiary site.

One of those reported injured is Sheikh Akram a-Sabri, former Mufti of Jerusalem and al-Aksa's preacher. He said security forces also beat the protesters with batons.

Israeli police arrest an Israeli who tried to enter the Temple Mount in Jerusalem's Old City on October 30, 2014, wearing his tefillin.

Omar Kiswani, director of al-Aqsa Mosque, told reporters outside the site that "the closure, the occupation, and the prevention of the call for prayers are all unfair and unjust and constitute a violation of the United Nations resolutions and the global agreements".

In a statement, Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said that Israeli forces removed worshippers at Lions' Gate for allegedly blocking the street while performing prayers. Israel allows the Jordanian-controlled Waqf to serve as custodians of the Temple Mount and grants Muslim worshippers access to the Mount twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week with the exception of rare instances of security threats.

He said Israel's respect for the historic and legal status in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the end of all attempts to create new facts on the ground is the key to restoring calm in the Holy shrines.

In a shooting attack on Friday morning, three Palestinian Muslims with Israeli citizenship shot dead two Israel policemen near the gates of the compound.

Some key ministers in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition, seen as the most right-wing government in Israel's history, strongly oppose a two-state solution to the conflict.

So Israel reinstalled the metal detectors. Under the status quo that governs Muslim and Jewish access to the Mount, Jews are prohibited from praying there.

Then following the attack, Israel announced it would be installing metal detectors at all entrances to the Temple Mount - something that has been done outside other mosques around the world, including the Ka'aba Mosque in Mecca, Islam's holiest place.

It all took place on the day the Palestinian Authority's Fatah faction called for a "Day of Rage".

The Jerusalem Legal Aid and Human Rights Center (JLAC) and Adalah - the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel - presented an objection to Israeli authorities as a preliminary procedure.
