4 protesters killed during East Jerusalem clashes, Palestinian media says

Palestinian protesters clashed with Israeli police near the Mosque of al-Aqsa in Jerusalem's Old City, the site Jews call the Temple Mount.

Protests and scuffles between demonstrators and Israeli police have erupted outside the holy site in Jerusalem's Old City on previous nights.

"Women of all ages will be permitted", the earlier police statement said.

Jerusalem Muslim leaders have called on worshippers not to go through the metal detectors, and Muslims have been converging outside the Old City's Lion's Gate for prayers instead.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed the metal detectors were meant to ensure the safety of worshippers and visitors and not an attempt to disturb the fragile status quo under which Jordan is custodian of the site and Jewish prayer is forbidden.

But a spokesperson suggested that officers may sometimes only choose to conduct spot checks, after Israel's security cabinet decided not to overrule the decision to install detectors.

The increased security measures were taken after police said the three attackers who emerged armed from the compound and shot at police on Friday had stashed their weapons on the holy site.

Palestinians responded to the new security measures with extreme rioting in East Jerusalem Friday.

Former police chiefs, quoted in the media reports, have warned that efforts to ensure such a large gathering passes through the metals detectors would trigger major unrest.

The US State Department issued a warning on Monday barring employees and their families from visiting the Temple Mount until July 24.

"Muslim leaders called for a mass gathering to protest Israel installing metal detectors at the holy site where Arab citizens of Israel carried out a deadly shooting last week".

Local sources told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the occupation forces brought in more metal barriers and spread them across the Old City and near Al-Aqsa Mosque's gates in order to prevent demonstrations in support of Al-Aqsa.

Questions about control of the site have frequently led to violent flare-ups between Israelis and Palestinians in the past.

The Waqf refused to ascend the Temple Mount after the installation of the metal detectors and security cameras. To Muslims, Haram Al-Sharif is the third holiest site after Mecca and Medina.

Thousands of Israeli soldiers and troops were deployed in eastern Jerusalem following riots Thursday, which resumed Friday afternoon, Israel's Channel 2 reported.
