Al-Jazeera rejects Netanyahu's call for closure of Jerusalem office

On Friday three Palestinian assailants opened fire from a sacred site known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temp

Israeli authorities closed the Al-Aqsa Mosque, venerated by Muslims and Jews - who call the site Temple Mount - and canceled weekly Friday prayers for the first time in almost five decades, following a deadly shootout July 14.

Despite Israel's compliance with Muslim and global demands to remove security upgrades at the Lion's Gate entrance to the Temple Mount, Fatah and Hamas called for a "day of rage" Friday.

The Jordanian government announced that Israeli decision to reverse its unacceptable measures at Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram al-Sharif, is a key step to restore calm in the occupied Palestinian territories, especially in holly sites.

Thousands of Palestinians have been praying in the streets outside the shrine after religious leaders told them not to worship inside the holy compound in protest.

"The prayers will happen, God willing, inside the Al Aqsa Mosque", Abbas said after Muslim authorities announced an end to a almost two-week boycott of the site.

Thus, it's time that the global community redoubles its efforts to resolve the mother conflict in the Middle East and leaves no stone unturned to actualise the Two State solution which will see the states of Israel and Palestine exist side by side in security, peace and concord.

Israel added cameras and metal detectors at the site after a July 14 attack in which two Israeli officers and all three attackers were killed.

Prayer and entry rights to the holy site are sensitive because of Israel's control over Jerusalem's Old City as well as the site's importance to Jews, who call it the Temple Mount.

Protesters surrounding the area of the gate engaged in violent clashes with Israeli security forces before the gate was opened.

On the light of the Israeli police decision, the religious leaders in the city chose to perform the afternoon prayers in Al-Aqsa Mosque and totally end their sit-in that has been going on for 13 days.

"When we made a decision to freeze security coordination with Israel, it was because of a number of things that had arisen, including Al-Aqsa issue", Abbas said.

Before the announcement, factions had been calling for a Day of Rage on Friday, which would likely have further fuelled the conflict. King Abdullah has a special role as protector of the holy site.

Muslim leaders, including the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf, said worshipers are encouraged to return to the holy site. On July 24, the Journal's Rory Jones reported on the attack on a security guard at the Israeli embassy in Jordan. The site is also revered by Jews as the site of two ancient temples and is known as Temple Mount, the holiest place in Judaism.

In a separate development, Mr Netanyahu accused the Qatar-funded, pan-Arab Al Jazeera TV channel of fuelling the crisis.

Mass clashes were fixed in the following days in East Jerusalem and other parts of the West Bank between Israeli law enforces and Palestinians protesting against Israel's imposing additional security measures in the area of the al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount.
