HTC Vive VR for China is Under Development, Reveals HTC

Standalone HTC Vive Headset Announced

One of the biggest advantages of a wireless VR experience provided by standalone VR headsets is that it makes the gameplay feel more real as the player is not constricted by wires nor restrained by a docked in device. The new HTC Vive standalone experience will be cheaper and allow a user to roam without cables.

HTC has pulled the wraps off a new standalone VR headset that is specifically for the Chinese market.

HTC has only announced the standalone Vive VR headset for customers in China today.

HTC is using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform to power the Vive Standalone VR Headset, the same chipset used in many high-end smartphones on the market today. A couple of months back, Qualcomm announced a partnership and reference design for Google's Daydream platform, a purpose-built experience for VR that extends beyond the capabilities of what Cardboard originally offered. HTC's landing page for the headset also says it will run games and other apps from Viveport, HTC's own app store. The heart of the platform is powerful Snapdragon 835 processor, created to support built-in VR functionality and allow developers to more rapidly release compelling content.

While this headset is part of the Vive family, there will nearly certainly be marked differences from the now on the market. Fast forward to July 2017 and HTC has announced a standalone VR headset in China, suggesting that the standalone HTC Vive VR headset will be making its debut in the United Kingdom sooner rather than later.

There's also no word on how much the headset will cost or what it'll look like, although HTC has released a "concept silhouette" that you can see below. A built-in screen and a Snapdragon 835 CPU make it completely self-contained, so you don't need a beefy gaming PC, or even a top-spec smartphone to dive straight into VR.

The so-called Oculus "Pacific" will reportedly be made by Xiaomi, and like HTC's China-exclusive headset, will be able to operate without the need for any additional hardware.

The HTC Vive Consumer Edition was recently launched in India for Rs 92,990.
