Northwestern University professor, Oxford employee caught in California

An Oxford University employee and a United States professor suspected of killing a man in Chicago have been arrested.

Wyndham Lathem, 42, of Northwestern University in Chicago and Andrew Warren, 56, of Oxford University in Britain, were in police custody in Oakland, California. "We are also thankful that this did not end in further tragedy".

Police suspect the pair of murdering Trenton Cornell-Duranleau, who was found with multiple stab wounds, in Mr Lathem's apartment on July 27.

Chicago police had earlier identified the victim as Trenton Cornell, but have since said his full name was Trenton Cornell Duranleau.

Before his arrest, Lathem had sent a video message to friends and family apologizing "for involvement in murder of Trenton Cornell", tweeted Anthony Guglielmi, chief communications officer for the Chicago Police Department.

Lathem, an associate microbiology professor at Northwestern, surrendered at the federal courthouse in Oakland, U.S. Marshals Service supervisory inspector Ed Farrell said.

"The U.S. Marshals in Oakland have been working throughout the week with the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Chicago Police Department", said the U.S. Marshals Service in a statement.

Warren, of Swindon, Wilts, used to be a Stagecoach driver before becoming a senior treasury assistant at Somerville College at the University of Oxford.

The pair had been named as suspects in the attack that was so brutal the blade of the knife used in the murder had broken off, police said.

While there, one of them made a $1,000 (£766) cash donation to the public library there in Cornell-Duranleau's name.

A hairstylist fondly recalled Cornell-Duranleau. He declined to elaborate on their relationship.

POLICE in America say they have an "idea" where Swindon murder suspect Andrew Warren is hiding after a manhunt was launched.

Warren has also been arrested.

Lathem and Cornell-Duranleau knew each other but it is not clear whether Warren, who was visiting the USA for the first time, knew him, police said.

"There is no indication of any risk to the Northwestern community from this individual at this time", Cubbage added.

"This is now a criminal matter under investigation by the appropriate authorities, and Northwestern University is cooperating in that investigation", according to the statement.
