Special counsel requests Michael Flynn documents

Special counsel Robert Mueller wants documents from White House on Michael Flynn's ties to Turkey

They are said to have questioned witnesses about his dealings with Turkish-American lobbyist Ekim Alptekin, who paid his consulting firm Flynn Intel Group $530,000 during the USA election past year. The alleged payments were reportedly made in exchange for a campaign discrediting a cleric accused of orchestrating the military coup that threatened to overtake Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan in July 2016.

Washington- US federal investigators are examining whether former national security adviser Michael Flynn was secretly paid by the Turkish government to lobby, according to a report from The New York Times published on Friday. His potential failure to register as a foreign agent could also carry a felony charge.

Mueller's team, investigating whether President Trump's campaign coordinated with Russian Federation to influence last year's election, have questioned witnesses close to the former three-star general about Flynn's work with firms tied to the Turkish government, the New York Times reported.

Flynn resigned from the Trump administration in February after reports surfaced he had misled senior White House officials about his past conversations with Kremlin officials.

A transcript of intercepted calls between Mr Flynn and Mr Kislyak revealed they had discussed U.S. sanctions imposed when former President Barack Obama concluded that Moscow had interfered in the USA election campaign.

According to the Times, Mueller's team has "asked the White House for documents" regarding Flynn's brief tenure there.

Flynn was Trump's national security adviser for less than a month.

Bharara was sacked by President Trump in March, even though Bharara said Trump invited him, shortly after the November 2016 election, to stay on.

The Pentagon launched an investigation that will scrutinise Mr Flynn's financial arrangements to determine whether he has failed to disclose payments from Russian and Turkish lobbyists.
