And now Australian star Cate Blanchett has been tipped to play Lucille in an authorised biopic about the American actress. The search for a Desi Arnaz, Ball's husband on and off camera (for a while), continues, as does the hunt for Fred and Ethel portrayers Vivian Vance and William Frawley.

There have been previous attempts to bring this Hollywood love story to the screen, including 1991's Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter, with Francis Fisher and Maurice Bernard in the title roles.

The Lucy and Desi project also involves the two children from the marriage - Lucie Luckinbill and Desi Arnaz Jr. - and includes rights to the use of memoirs written by both Ball and Arnaz.

With a studio ready to finance it, the search is on for an actor to play Ball's other half, Cuban-born Arnaz.

Blanchett, who recently made her Broadway debut in THE PRESENT, will soon return to the London stage in the role of Margo Channing in Ivo van Hove's ALL ABOUT EVE. Ball and Arnaz divorced in 1960, and Ball began running Desilu Productions in 1962.

Blanchett, meanwhile, has been nominated for six acting awards by the Academy, taking home the Oscar for best performance in 2004's "The Aviator" and 2013's "Blue Jasmine".

The script has reportedly been around since 2015, with Aaron Sorkin, the screenwriter behind "The Social Network", "Moneyball" and the creator of shows like "The West Wing" and "The Newsroom". According to SlashFilm, Ball was 28 when she fell in love with a 23-year-old Arnaz on the set of the RKO Studios movie "Too Many Girls".
